BRASSTOWN BALD

With a summit elevation of 4,784 feet Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the state of Georgia. Located in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest, Brasstown Bald offers views across the states of Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

The name is derived from the Cherokee word "Itse'yĭ" (New Green Place) or (Place of Fresh Green) from "Itse'hi" (green or unripe vegetation) and "yĭ," the locative. The name occurs in several location in the old Cherokee country, variously spelled Echia, Echoee, Etchowee and sometimes "Brasstown," from a confusion of "Itse'yĭ" with "Ûňtsaiyĭ" (brass).
